Arsenic Poisoning Compensation Claims
Got a Question?
What Is Arsenic Poisoning?
Arsenic poisoning is a medical condition that is mainly caused by elevated levels of arsenic ions found in the body. Arsenic is mainly from ground water that naturally contains high concentrations of arsenic, which affects metabolism and DNA repair. It is estimated over 137 million people worldwide drink arsenic ground water each year. This means that there are hundreds of millions of people who are arsenic affected or potentially arsenic affected every year.
Arsenic poisoning that dissolves in water is quickly absorbed in the body by drinking. In northeast India, millions of people have been exposed to toxic levels of arsenic in their drinking water. Most of them have been physically and emotionally affected and others have lost their lives.
Are There Different Types of Arsenic Poisoning?
There are two types of arsenic poisoning. They are:
- Inorganic arsenic: this is often found in products like herbicides, insecticides, wood preservatives and some types of insulation.
- Organic arsenic: it is used in certain drugs to treat or prevent blood parasites including heartworm.
Researchers have concluded that most arsenic poisoning that is absorbed in the body will bind to red blood cells and later distributed to body tissues with the highest levels of arsenic poisoning accumulating in the liver, kidneys, heart and lungs. In case of long-term exposure, arsenic accumulates in the skin, nails, sweat glands.
What are the Symptoms of Arsenic Poisoning?
Signs of arsenic poisoning usually come abruptly within few hours of ingestion and are quite severe. In some cases, it can take up to 24hrs for symptoms to develop. The symptoms may include:
- Muscle pain
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Numbness in hands and feet
- Rash
- Dehydration
- Weakness
- Depression
- Bloody urine etc
Symptoms for most patients can continue for hours or even weeks depending on the amount of arsenic they have ingested, but in very severe cases, death can be immediate. Chronic exposure through drinking water may even increase the risk of diabetes, heart diseases, skin cancer and stroke.
It is also said that arsenic is used as a deadly exterminate in several agricultural insecticides and poisons, in shotgun pellets, and as a metal for glass, mirrors and lasers. Arsenic has been known and used in Persia, Asia and other parts of the world since ancient times as the symptoms of arsenic poisoning were somewhat ill-defined. It was frequently used for murder until the advent of the marsh test; a sensitive chemical test for its presence. That is why arsenic is referred as the king of poison and the poison of kings.
