Maternal Sepsis Compensation Claims
Got a Question?
What Is Maternal Sepsis?
Maternal Sepsis is a popular problem for many mothers in the United Kingdom. It’s actually the number one cause of death for new mothers, and the incidence rate is increasing. If sepsis is caught early enough, the more serious developments can be prevented. Septicaemia and septic shock can lead to death, so it is important that sepsis is caught quickly when the symptoms begin to show. If there is a delay in the diagnosis of sepsis, or if it is missed completely the results can be devastating to the patient. If this has happened to you, then we advise that you explore the idea of starting a compensation claim.
How Dangerous Is Maternal Sepsis?
Maternal sepsis can be a life-threatening condition and it begins with an over-zealous immune system. Usually, in the cases of pregnant women, the infection enters via the genital tract. After the infection has entered the body, the immune system will begin to fight it. With sepsis, something goes wrong and the immune system then goes into overdrive. This complication is called a systemic inflammatory response syndrome, or SIRS. The syndrome creates swelling, inflammation and causes the blood to clot.
If this condition is left untreated, it can turn into septic shock in a matter of hours. With septic shock, the blood pressure drops extremely low. This deprives many parts of the body of oxygen, especially the vital organs, and most importantly the brain. It is at this point where there is the biggest risks, and a high chance of death. Survivors of septic shock are often left with permanent organ damage, and sometimes require limbs to be amputated that have been subject to the lack of oxygen.
Septic shock is a fast-acting and aggressive condition, but if it is caught early enough and treated quickly, it is easily treated. If a diagnosis is late, or completely missed, usually the outcome is devastated.
What are the Risk Factors of Maternal Sepsis?
According to the NPEU & the UKOSS, there are a range of factors that can affect the chances of a new mother contracting sepsis, and these include caesarian and anaemia. The biggest factor of all is late or missed diagnosis. 71% of new mothers between 2003-2005 who had fatal cases of maternal sepsis had received ‘substandard care’. The main reason their treatment was deemed substandard was due to a delay in diagnosis.
What are the Symptoms of Maternal Sepsis?
The symptoms of maternal sepsis can be very vague in the early stages, and often resemble the symptoms experienced by people for the flu. They are:
- Fever
- Increased breathing rate
- Faster heart rate
- Chills & shivers
When the more vague symptoms aren’t addressed in time, they can then develop into severe sepsis or sometimes even septic shock. The symptoms for these two conditions are much more serious. They include:
- Severe breathlessness & pain in the muscles
- Feeling faint or dizzy
- Speech becomes slurred
- Vomiting & nausea
- Cold, clammy, mottled skin.
- Confusion
- Sometimes loss of consciousness
If these symptoms are present, there are very high risks for the mother, including organ failure and sometimes even death.
Which Procedures Should Medical Experts Carry Out?
If a medical professional thinks you may have sepsis, they should carry out the ‘Sepsis 6’. The sepsis 6 are a set of instructions for the healthcare professionals to follow when they perform the necessary procedures.
What is the Sepsis 6?
- High flow oxygen administered
- Blood cultures taken.
- Broad spectrum antibiotics given.
- Intravenous fluid challenges given.
- Serum lactate & haemoglobin measured.
- Hourly urine output measured.
